Der indische Weihrauchbaum (Boswellia serrata) gehört zu den Balsambaumgewächsen. Er wächst in den Bergregionen Indiens und braucht absolute Trockenheit. Der Baum wird auch Olibaum genannt, nach dem von ihm produzierten Olibanum (Weihrauch). Das körnige Harz wird aus den Stämmen der Boswellia-Bäume gewonnen. Hierzu wird die Rinde angeritzt, woraufhin der Baum ein Sekret ausscheidet, das sich nach einigen Tagen in Baumharz verwandelt. Dieses bleibt an der Rinde kleben, trocknet und härtet aus. Nach ungefähr zwei Wochen wird es abgeschabt und selektiert.

Die luftgetrockneten Gummiharze setzen beim Verbrennen einen intensiven, kräuterigen Duft frei. Sie werden in verschiedenen Religionen bei Kulthandlungen verwendet, da man mit ihnen ganzheitliches Wohlbefinden verbindet. Die Hauptbestandteile von indischem Weihrauch sind ätherische Öle, Schleimstoffe und Harzsäuren, auch Boswelliasäuren genannt.
