Cranberry – die amerikanische Preiselbeere<\/strong><\/p>\n

Zwischen der amerikanischen Cranberry und der in Europa heimischen, wildwachsenden Preiselbeere besteht eine enge botanische Verwandtschaft sowie gro\u00dfe \u00c4hnlichkeit mit der ebenfalls bei uns wild wachsenden Moosbeere. Alle Beerensorten geh\u00f6ren zur Familie der Heidekrautgew\u00e4chse und zur Gattung der Heidelbeere.<\/p>\n

Die Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) w\u00e4chst als Strauch, der sich am Boden kriechend ausbreitet und bis zu einem Meter lange Wurzeln und Ranken ausbildet. Die Pflanzen gedeihen nur auf sauren B\u00f6den – bevorzugt Moorb\u00f6den mit Sanduntergrund – sie lieben ein Klima mit k\u00fchlen und feuchten Sommern und einem milden Winter. Die Bl\u00e4tter sind 1 bis 2 cm lang; sie sind oval, h\u00e4ngend mit 4 Kronzipfeln. Cranberries bl\u00fchen im sp\u00e4ten Juni und fr\u00fchen Juli und haben rosa-rote Bl\u00fcten. Die Fr\u00fcchte sind in der Gr\u00f6\u00dfe vergleichbar mit kleineren Kirschen, reif sind sie leuchtend rot gef\u00e4rbt und ca. 15 mm dick. Einige Sorten werden sogar so tiefrot, dass die Beeren fast schwarz erscheinen. Sie zeichnen sich durch ein knackig festes Fruchtfleisch und einen fruchtig-herben Geschmack aus. Neben Bitterstoffen enthalten Cranberries viel S\u00e4ure und Pektin. Deshalb schmecken sie im Rohzustand herb und sauer. Ihre hervorragenden geschmacklichen Eigenschaften entfalten sich durch das Kochen.<\/p>\n
